Done Your Own Oil Change?
Reset Your Service Light Properly.

Changed the oil but the warning light is still on — here's why, and how to fix it the right way.

4 June 2026  ·  OBDIntel Canterbury

You've done the hard part — sourced the oil, done the drain, replaced the filter. But you start the car and the Service Due or Oil Change Required light is still staring at you.

That's normal. On most modern vehicles, that light doesn't reset itself — and it doesn't always respond to a simple button sequence either.

Why the Light Won't Go Away

Some older cars have a manual reset procedure — the classic "turn key, pump accelerator three times, wait" handshake. But many newer vehicles, particularly European cars, modern utes, and anything post-2018, store the service interval in the ECU. The only way to reset it properly is with a diagnostic tool that can write to the service counter directly.

Without that reset, the car's computer still thinks the oil is old — regardless of what's actually in the sump.

What Happens If You Leave It On

  • The reminder keeps coming back — every startup, every drive
  • Some vehicles restrict DPF regeneration or engine protection logic when the service counter is overdue
  • It kills resale value — buyers see "Service Overdue" on the dash and walk away
  • When a real fault occurs later, the service light obscures the new warning

Covering it with tape isn't the answer. Neither is hoping it clears itself.
